August Landscaping To-Do List

  • Lawns and flowers need about 1 inch of water a week so depending on rain, water as necessary.

  • Plants in containers may need to be watered once a day, and maybe twice.

  • Cut annuals back by one third or two thirds to encourage fuller growth and more blooms.

  • Take advantage of cooler mornings for weeding. Also, pinch off spent blooms and problem foliage.

  • Top off beds with more mulch, if desired, but only up to three inches deep.

  • Order and begin planting your spring-flowering bulbs.

  • Stop fertilizing roses, shrubs and trees.

  • Plan hardscape projects you want to tackle in the fall.

  • Mow high now. Don’t let the grass get too long, but don’t remove more than one-third of the blade.

  • Mid-August to mid-September is the best time to renovate or establish a new lawn in Wisconsin. Reseed bare spots, enriching the soil for greater success, but hold off on herbicides for weed control until the fall.
