Ideas for Planning Ahead for Spring Landscaping

Spring Flowers Green Bay, WI

Whether or not you believe the predictions of Punxsutawney Phil, (who did not see his shadow this year), Groundhog Day has passed, so eventually, Spring will arrive. Yet, for gardeners, Spring never seems to come soon enough.

If you’re anxious for the opportunity to begin planting for spring, remember there are still things that you can do now as you anticipate the long-awaited transition into Spring.

Here are few tips:

  • Remember to take some time, dream a little, and create a plan before you begin planting. You still have a few weeks to map out your ideas with some sketches. If you don’t already have one, create a gardening journal to keep a record of info such as a seed chart of names and planting dates for next year.
  • If you have pictures from last year you may want to consider adding some new planting areas to improve your landscape.
  • Ask yourself a few questions:
  •  What was your experience last year?
  • Do you want to increase or decrease your planting space?
  • Edible garden or flower garden?
  • Decide how much space you want to devote to each and remember, more space means more maintenance.

Planting for Spring

You may already have some seeds, so take an inventory and peruse some seed catalogs to gather a nice variety for the coming year. Mix annuals and perennials for season-long color. Keep in mind your USDA plant hardiness zone to select which plants will thrive in your Wisconsin area and survive over the winter. Once you have your list, place your order and get your plant materials ready while you are waiting for your order to arrive.

A good rule of thumb is to start sowing seeds indoors about 6 weeks before the estimated average last frost, (which is generally, sometime in May for Northeast, WI area).

While you’re thinking ahead, don’t forget to include additional plants for your landscape and shop catalogs for ideas. A great time to plant trees and shrubs is just before Spring to ensure they get well established early on.
